Version Information

Version history

What's changed from release to release. Realm of Shadows updates through the Microsoft Store, so new versions arrive automatically once they finish review.

Now live: 1.0.21 is the current build on the Microsoft Store — the big gameplay, loot & creation update (which also folds in everything from 1.0.20) is here. If you already own the game it updates automatically; if it hasn't yet, open the Microsoft Store → Library → Get updates.

1.0.21

Current release · installs today June 2026

The big gameplay, loot & creation update — now live on the Microsoft Store. Includes everything from 1.0.20.

  • Status effects & elemental ailments — poison, burning and bleeding deal damage over time; freezing makes a foe lose turns; blind and weaken sap their attacks.
  • Talents — every hero earns talent points as they level and spends them on lasting bonuses.
  • Difficulty modes — choose Story, Normal or Hard when you start a new game.
  • Gem sockets & the Forge — add sockets to your gear, set gems for elemental and stat bonuses, and enchant plain gear into magic items.
  • Day/night cycle & dynamic weather sweep across the overworld as you travel.
  • Bestiary — a creature compendium that fills in as you fight.
  • Achievements that carry across your saves.
  • Multiple save slots and a master volume control.
  • Creation Tools — your custom content is now saved as readable, shareable files, and Content Packs let you export and import creations.

1.0.20

Superseded · folded into 1.0.21 June 2026

The big loot & tools update — this build never finished propagating, so its changes ship as part of 1.0.21.

  • Procedural enchanted gear — randomly generated weapons & armor with affixes, eight damage elements, five rarity tiers (Common → Legendary) and collectible equipment sets with escalating bonuses.
  • Magic Find & loot quality — lucky jewelry that boosts rare drops, element-tinted item icons, rarity loot pop-ups, and the ability to disenchant surplus gear into gold.
  • Smarter gear screens — rarity-coloured names, an element line and set-progress on the inventory and character sheet, armor warding, upgrade hints, and merchants that now stock forged magic gear.
  • Visible combat dice — every attack shows a two-line action / roll read-out, so you can see exactly why a blow landed or missed.
  • Shareable world seeds — pick a seed for a New Game and for the end-game New Realm; the same seed always builds the same world.
  • Scaling finale — the Shadow Sovereign now grows to match your party's end-game level.
  • Three new Creation Tools (Pro) — NPC Editor, Shop Editor and Item Editor join the suite.
  • Dozens of UI and spacing fixes across shops, the healer, the editors and on-screen text.

1.0.19

Superseded · replaced by 1.0.21 June 2026

Previously the live build; now superseded by 1.0.21.

  • Sprite Editor overhaul — a full pixel-art editor: brush, line, rectangle and circle tools, flood fill, dual mirror axes, undo, zoom-to-cursor and draggable scrollbars.
  • Animation support — onion-skin frame layers with a play/stop preview and adjustable FPS, exported as a square sprite-sheet with a JSON atlas that reopens as frames.
  • In-game file browser — open your saved custom sheets, auto-detect the grid, and rename / save under a new name.
  • Fixed an unwinnable world — a newly generated realm now always guarantees the stabilizer tower is reachable.
  • Launch splash art now matches the main menu.

1.0.17 – 1.0.18

Superseded June 2026

The "Realm of Shadows" relaunch under Microsoft's new game format.

  • Renamed to Realm of Shadows and migrated to Microsoft's new game category and GDK package format.
  • Fresh world every time — each New Game re-randomizes the realm from a new seed behind a generation progress screen, with New Game+ after the finale.
  • Procedurally placed world-map structure stamps (towns, keeps, dungeons, towers) and far richer dungeon decoration — themed props and multi-cell furniture.
  • A large monster-sprite pass: hundreds of per-monster sprites with mis-generated art cleaned up.
  • The Pro Editors add-on was re-created under the new Store product.

1.0.14 – 1.0.16

Superseded June 2026

Story, quests, and the first Store builds.

  • Main story arc — stabilize every realm, face the Shadow Sovereign finale, then carry on into New Game+.
  • Dynamic fetch-quests — townsfolk hand out quests on the fly, tracked in a quest log grouped by area, with wilderness and dungeon targets hinted on the map.
  • Per-monster sprite system with a generation pipeline, level-gated spell casting, and a Player Editor for reviewing the party.
  • Extensive combat, camp and quest UI polish, plus cleaned-up spell descriptions.
